At Bikaner House this August, NewArtX and curator-writer Manan Shah present (Re)claiming Rights of Render(ing), an exhibition that makes a clear argument: digital art is not a lesser, colder or secondary form, but a serious extension of artistic practice in the 21st century. On view from August 7 to 13, with a preview on August 6, the show brings together artists whose work has long been grounded in painting, sculpture, photography and mixed practice, now translated into digital form.
Rather than treating technology as a novelty, the show frames it as another medium through which artists think, observe and construct meaning. In that sense, the digital works on view are about continuity, a continuation of each artist’s visual language through a new set of tools.
The curatorial text positions the exhibition as a challenge to a long-standing skepticism around digital art in South Asia, where it has often been pushed to the margins. Here, that hierarchy is directly confronted. By inviting artists known for traditional media to work digitally, the exhibition opens up a more nuanced conversation about materiality, translation and the evolving life of form.
The participating artists are Alex Davis, Atul Bhalla, Gigi Scaria, GR Iranna, Riyas Komu, Sibdas Sengupta, Teja Gavankar, Vibha Galhotra and Waswo X. Waswo, who bring established practices into conversation with digital language.
Manan Shah’s curatorial text is sharp in insisting that digital art can be intellectually rigorous without being visually austere. The strongest works, it suggests, are those that reveal how an artist can use digital processes to deepen ideas of texture, space and form. That emphasis on translation rather than novelty is what gives the exhibition its relevance.
The show also reflects NewArtX’s wider ambition to build long-term value within the art ecosystem. With its focus on institutional thinking, technology and artistic dialogue, the platform acts as a bridge between innovation and cultural continuity.
