Abul Hisham’s Exhibition “Shrines” at Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Delhi

Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Delhi presents Shrines, a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Abul Hisham, on view from 5 September to 23 October 2025. This marks Hisham’s third solo show with the gallery, following his acclaimed exhibition Recitation, which explored meditative repetition and spiritual memory through pastel-on-paper works.

In Shrines, Hisham turns towards the ineffable and the unfamiliar, engaging new visual languages, palettes, and materials that expand beyond his earlier practice. The works invite viewers into a contemplative space where faith, memory, and form intertwine. The exhibition includes pieces such as Man near the Wall (2025), a striking composition featuring hieroglyphic motifs and textured panels that evoke themes of decay and revelation.

Rather than rejecting tradition, Hisham reinterprets it—loosening its boundaries to reveal what lies beneath the visible surface. His part-effaced figures and fragmented structures suggest both disintegration and transcendence, evoking a sense of the sacred reimagined through absence.

The show transforms the gallery into a constructed sanctuary of memory and imagination. Architectural fragments, ritual gestures, and atmospheric elements combine to create spaces reminiscent of ruins, sanctums, and ancestral shrines. Through this interplay of structure and loss, Shrines offers a meditation on how the sacred can persist in the fragmented present—where reverence resides not in permanence, but in what endures through reconstruction and remembrance.

About the Artist

Born in Ponnani, Kerala, Abul Hisham (b. 1987) is known for his evocative visual vocabulary that weaves together themes of faith, history, and corporeality. A graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Hisham’s practice spans drawing, painting, and mixed media. His works often engage with the tensions between devotion and doubt, body and spirit, and the material and the mystical. Over the years, Hisham has exhibited widely in India and abroad, and his art continues to probe the intersections of personal memory and collective consciousness through a language that is both intimate and allegorical.
