About the Exhibition
MOOL, a group art exhibition in New Delhi running from 6 August to 13 August 2026, grew out of a dialogue between artists Mahwish Chishty and Gunjan Kumar regarding ancestral ties in undivided Punjab. Curated by Shaleen Wadhwana and presented by Exhibit320 Gallery, the show brings together artworks from The Sindhu Project alongside new intergenerational responses. The presentation centres on a core inquiry: what makes one feel a sense of belonging in South Asia? At the heartbeat of the exhibition are personal family artefacts displayed publicly for the first time, bridging private memories with public discourse.
Key Themes and Artistic Mediums
The exhibition unfolds across four distinct thematic strands: Family Inherited & Chosen, Emotional Cartography, The Body and Its Object Biographies, and Home in Script. Working across medium-spanning practices—including painting, ceramics, printmaking, embroidery, weaving, and 3D printing—the participating artists address women-led legacies, gender biases, decolonisation, and erased geographies. Highlights include Reena Saini Kallat’s exploration of porous political borders, Zarina’s reflections on displacement, Nilima Sheikh’s portable homes, and Hema Shironi’s embroidered documentations of erased Sri Lankan neighborhoods.
Multi-Sensory Collaborations
In a unique institutional collaboration, MOOL features a specialized music and sound component curated by the Delhi-based initiative Upstairs. The opening evening will feature a live baithak, accompanied by an ongoing listening library throughout the show’s run. By weaving together classical, folk, and regional South Asian soundscapes in direct response to the visual art, the exhibition offers a immersive, multi-sensory reflection on shared heritage and pluralistic identity.
