Beijing World Capital of Architecture 2029 marks UNESCO’s selection of China’s capital as the next UNESCO–UIA World Capital of Architecture. The designation recognises Beijing’s rich architectural heritage, sustainable urban vision and role as host of the 2029 UIA World Congress of Architects.

UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany designated Beijing as the UNESCO–UIA World Capital of Architecture 2029. He announced the decision after the Joint Committee for the World Capital of Architecture, chaired by French architect Dominique Perrault, recommended the city. Moreover, UNESCO announced the title in Paris. As a result, Beijing will host the 30th UIA World Congress of Architects. The city will also become a global platform for discussions on the future of cities.
Furthermore, UNESCO praised Beijing for its rich architectural heritage. The organisation also recognised its sustainable urban vision, successful regeneration projects and vibrant architectural culture.
Beijing Architecture 2029: Heritage Meets Innovation
Under the theme “Back to Balance,” Beijing 2029 will promote architecture as a bridge between culture, nature and people. Moreover, the programme will focus on balancing heritage preservation with contemporary urban growth.
In a statement, El-Enany said UNESCO is confident that Beijing’s “extraordinary architectural heritage, dynamic urban transformation, and forward-looking vision will inspire new international dialogue on the power of architecture in improving people’s lives and safeguarding shared heritage for future generations.”
A City of Layered Architectural Histories
Beijing’s designation reflects international recognition of its layered urban landscape, where imperial palaces and hutong alleyways coexist with monumental socialist-era boulevards and contemporary high-rise districts. UNESCO and UIA officials pointed to recent urban renewal initiatives and heritage conservation projects as evidence that the city is striving to reconcile historical protection with the demands of a rapidly modernising metropolis.
During the programme, Beijing will focus on its changing skyline, major infrastructure projects and public spaces. In addition, discussions will explore climate resilience, affordable housing and cultural continuity.
Beijing World Capital of Architecture 2029: UNESCO–UIA Programme
UNESCO and the International Union of Architects jointly established the World Capital of Architecture programme. It recognises cities that use architecture, culture and urban planning to support sustainable development.
Beijing follows Rio de Janeiro, which held the inaugural title in 2020, Copenhagen in 2023 and Barcelona in 2026, joining a growing network of cities that use architecture-focused programming to debate and shape urban futures.
Beijing World Capital of Architecture 2029: Looking Ahead
Meanwhile, Chinese and international architectural institutions have already started preparations for the 2029 UIA World Congress of Architects. Preliminary plans suggest the congress will take place in June 2029.
Finally, UNESCO and UIA officials say the programme will showcase Beijing’s architectural evolution. It will also promote global collaboration on resilient, liveable and sustainable cities.
