Born on May 11, 1932, in Voghera, Italy, Garavani studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He launched his haute couture house in Rome in 1960, partnering with Giancarlo Giammetti, and gained fame after his 1962 Florence debut. The brand expanded globally in the 1980s with stores in Milan, Rome, and New York, establishing a luxury empire.​

Garavani revolutionized fashion with vibrant crimson hues dubbed “Valentino Red” and glamorous designs worn by figures like Jacqueline Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor. He retired in 2008 after creating over 4,000 collections, leaving an indelible mark on haute couture. His foundation continues his vision of creativity and elegance.​

Garavani will lie in state at Piazza Mignanelli in Rome on January 21-22, 2026. A funeral service is set for January 23 at the Basilica Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri.​
