Artist Ravi Kashi Explores Paper as Metaphor in New Delhi Solo Exhibition

Threshold Art Gallery presents “Shadows of Breath,” a solo exhibition by Bangalore-based artist Ravi Kashi, running from October 31 to November 30, 2025. The exhibition examines paper as a metaphor for the human body through the artist’s specialized technique of pulp painting.

Kashi’s work treats paper not as a traditional surface but as a sculptural medium, engaging it through draping, folding, and layering to evoke organic forms including skin, cloth, and cellular structures. The artist employs haptic imprints of touch, texture, and pressure to create what he describes as a meditation on the ephemeral nature of physical existence.

“In this exhibition, the fragility of paper, the echoes of the body, and the weight of language all coalesce into a conversation about the unspoken and the internal in the human experience,” Kashi stated.

About the artist

Born in 1968 in Bangalore, Kashi holds degrees in Painting, Printmaking, and English Literature. He received his B.F.A. in Painting from the College of Fine Arts, Bengaluru in 1988, his M.F.A. in Printmaking from M.S. University, Baroda in 1990, and a Master’s in English Literature from the University of Mysuru in 1995.

His practice developed following specialized training in handmade papermaking. In 2001, he studied under J. Parry at the Glasgow School of Art through a Charles Wallace India Trust Grant. He furthered his expertise in traditional Hanji papermaking during a 2009 residency in South Korea, supported by the InKo Centre, Chennai.

The artist incorporates Kannada language into his works, though not as legible text. Colors drawn from Bangalore’s landscape—deep rusts and muted greens—function as recollections of place. Dr. Arnika Ahldag, Director of Exhibitions & Curation at the Museum of Art & Photography (MAP), Bangalore, notes that Kashi’s work invites viewers “to linger in the ephemeral, to dwell in suggestion rather than certainty.”

Kashi’s accolades include the National Award from the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi (2000); first prize at Ventipertrenta, International Festival of Digital Art, Italy (2017); the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi Award for his book “Kannele” (2015); and multiple Karnataka Lalit Kala Academy Awards.

His most recent solo presentation, “We Don’t End at Our Edges,” was exhibited at MAP, Bangalore from March to June 2025. His work has been shown at galleries in Mumbai, New Delhi, London, Palo Alto, Shanghai, and Italy.

Kashi currently teaches as visiting faculty at RV College of Architecture and Azim Premji University while maintaining his studio practice in Bengaluru.
