The Koyo Kouoh Foundation has been officially launched in memory of the late curator, cultural theorist, and institutional leader Koyo Kouoh, marking a significant moment for the global contemporary art community. The foundation aims to preserve and extend Kouoh’s intellectual, curatorial, and political legacy, which profoundly shaped discourse around African and diasporic art.
Kouoh, who passed away earlier this year, was widely regarded as one of the most influential curatorial voices of her generation. As Executive Director and Chief Curator of Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, she redefined institutional practice through a strong commitment to criticality, inclusivity, and African-centered narratives. Her work consistently challenged Western hegemonies in art history while foregrounding voices from the Global South.
The newly established foundation will function as a platform for research, mentorship, and critical exchange. According to its founding statement, it will support emerging curators, scholars, and cultural practitioners through fellowships, archival initiatives, and public programming. Central to its mission is the continuation of Kouoh’s dedication to rigorous intellectual inquiry and transnational cultural dialogue.
