Mapping the Unseen: Seven Artists Chart the Landscapes of the Feminine Imagination

Nidhi Mariam Jacob

Bangalore’s KYNKYNY gallery makes its Mumbai debut with ‘Cartographies of the Inner World’, a group exhibition uniting seven voices in a heritage village at the heart of the city. The exhibition brings together seven women artists : Dimpy Menon, Rakhee Shenoy, Veenita Chendvankar, Payal Rokade, Bakula Nayak, Priyanka Aelay, and Nidhi Mariam Jacob in a thoughtfully curated group show that opens on 15 May at the storied gallery space 47-A.

Housed in a 19th-century Portuguese-style heritage home in the culturally rich enclave of Girgaum, 47-A Khotachiwadi provides an evocative backdrop for a show that is, at its core, about the act of dwelling, inwardly and outwardly. The exhibition runs through 24 May, welcoming visitors daily between 11.00 am and 7.00 pm.

True to its title, the show presents art as cartography, not of terrain and topography, but of the inner worlds that women carry: of myth and memory, of personal history and organic mystery. The works collectively assert that the interior life is as vast and worth charting as any external landscape.

The exhibition is organised around three resonant thematic currents. Rakhee Shenoy, Veenita Chendvankar, and Payal Rokade approach the canvas as surrealists, working through graphic compositions that fuse myth with memory, destabilising linear histories and inviting viewers into poetic, non-sequential narratives. Meanwhile, Dimpy Menon’s fluid bronze sculptures and Bakula Nayak’s mixed-media works on vintage documents offer a counterpoint of symbolic grace — honouring the texture of personal history, the beauty found in overlooked materials, and the quiet dignity of the everyday. Completing the exhibition, the botanical-inflected canvases of Nidhi Mariam Jacob and Priyanka Aelay draw the viewer into the hidden, almost mythological lives of plants and natural forms, proposing that the organic world is as much a site of interiority as the human mind.

Visitors can expect an exhibition that rewards lingering. Entry is open to all during gallery hours throughout the ten-day run.
