About the Exhibition
Opening on 20 March 2026 at Emami Art, Chance Remains of Another Time presents a new body of paintings by Suman Dey that reimagines urban existence through abstraction. The exhibition marks Dey’s second solo with the gallery after his 2023 debut. Using the format of polyptychs for the first time, Dey binds fragments of daily life—signs, sights, and spaces—into expansive compositions that echo both the vitality and the decay of the city.
Artist Practice
A self-taught abstractionist from Bengal, Dey draws upon his lived experience in Kolkata to construct painterly meditations on passage and persistence. His canvases reveal the rhythms of urban growth alongside the quiet traces of memory. In his latest works, smaller painted units coalesce into visual wholes that mirror the city’s own fragmentation.
Curatorial Vision
Curated by Ushmita Sahu, the exhibition signals what she calls a “quiet but decisive shift” in Dey’s practice. “This time the focus has shifted from his personal memories to the varied sights, signs, marks, and changes he notices in his everyday life,” Sahu notes. Richa Agarwal, CEO of Emami Art, adds, “This show moves in a different direction—it is both bold and introspective, and will offer viewers new explorations.”
