SANAA’s Taichung Green Museumbrary Opens in Taiwan

The Taichung Green Museumbrary, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese firm SANAA, officially opened to the public on December 13, 2025, in Taichung, Taiwan’s second-largest city.

Project Overview

This 58,000-square-meter cultural complex integrates the Taichung Art Museum and the city’s central public library, marking Taiwan’s first hybrid “museumbrary” model. Located on the northern edge of the 67-hectare Central Park in the former Shuinan Trade and Economic Park site, the facility embodies the concept of “a library in a park and an art museum in a forest.” SANAA founders Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa developed the project over 12 years, selected from 225 entries in a 2013 international competition.

Architectural Features

The design features eight interconnecting volumes with a translucent dual-layer metal facade that promotes lightness and transparency. Interior highlights include cloud-like ceiling panels, Arne Jacobsen chairs, and low-lying bookshelves on the seventh floor for panoramic views. The structure harmonizes with its green surroundings, fostering encounters between art, books, and nature.

Opening Exhibitions

The Taichung Art Museum launched with “A Call of All Beings: See you tomorrow, same time, same place,” running until April 12, 2026, featuring artists from 20 nations, including site-specific works by Michael Lin, Haegue Yang, and Adrien Tirtiaux. The opening drew dignitaries, curators, and artists.
