The Bihar Museum in Patna has been ranked ninth among the world’s best museums in 2026, placing it above New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Louvre in Paris.
The ranking comes from Germany-based travel guide Worth a Journey, whose World’s 100 Best Museums 2026 list was reported on October 28. The Met sits one spot lower at 10th, while the Louvre ranks 31st.
The Bihar Museum is the only Indian museum on the 100-strong list. It is also the highest-ranked of the 10 Asian museums included, and the only one from Asia to break into the top 10.

How the Worth a Journey ranking works
The museum list is one part of Worth a Journey’s wider annual selection of the world’s best destinations and experiences. Unlike attendance charts, it does not reward footfall. Its rankings are checked through on-site visits, so they reflect what a visitor actually experiences.
That explains how a museum that opened in 2015 can sit above the Louvre, which leads global visitor counts year after year.
What makes the Bihar Museum special
The guide describes the Bihar Museum as a modern state museum that tells Bihar’s story from the Stone Age to the present through sculptures, coins, manuscripts and folk art.
- Architecture: The campus on Bailey Road (Nehru Path) was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, and the building itself is a major draw.
- Collection: Highlights include the celebrated Didarganj Yakshi sculpture, along with archaeological finds, regional art and Mithila folk traditions.
- Bihar Museum Biennale: The museum’s third Biennale opened on its 10th Foundation Day in August 2025, themed “Global South: Shared Heritage”.
- Global praise: German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann has publicly praised its curation and design.
The museum was built as part of a state vision for a world-class institution in Patna, with ambitions often compared to the Louvre itself.
Why the ranking matters for Bihar
The top-10 finish puts Patna on the same map as Madrid, Vienna and New York for culture-minded travellers. For Bihar, already home to Nalanda, Bodh Gaya and Vaishali, it adds a strong reason to start a heritage trip in the state capital.
The recognition is also a boost for Indian museums more broadly. It shows that a decade-old regional institution can compete with centuries-old global names on visitor experience.
