Doug Aitken’s UNDER THE SUN: First India Exhibition at NMACC Mumbai

Doug Aitken’s first exhibition in India, titled UNDER THE SUN, opens on December 6, 2025, at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai and runs through February 22, 2026.

Spanning three floors of the NMACC Art House, the show explores narratives of past, present, and future, each on a dedicated level, guiding visitors through perceptions of time, space, and history. Aitken employs diverse media including site-specific sculptures, textiles crafted with over a dozen Indian artisans, a video work, and a new immersive light installation titled LIGHT FALL / OTHER WORLDS. The 2018 three-channel video NEW ERA features alongside these commissions, blending local materials like hand-worked wood and embroidered textiles with light and sound elements.

Curated by Roya Sachs and Mafalda Kahane, and produced by Elizabeth Edelman of TRIADIC, the exhibition bridges Indian and Western cultures through modern mythology and hypnotic, exploratory pieces. Aitken, known for multimedia works on hyperconnectivity and human-technology relations shown at institutions like MoMA and Centre Pompidou, creates a sensory dialogue across organic and virtual realms. NMACC, launched in 2023 at Jio World Centre in Bandra Kurla Complex, promotes global artistic exchange with advanced galleries open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–23:00.
