Bengaluru’s Gallery G is currently hosting The Masters & The Modern: East Edition, a major exhibition spotlighting artists from Eastern India, including Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand. Curated by Kolkata-based art historian and curator Kallol Bose, the show runs till March 31, 2026, at Gallery G, Maini Sadan, Lavelle Road.
Bringing together over three generations of artists, the exhibition traces the evolution of artistic practice in the region—from early Bengal School painters to contemporary artists responding to social and urban realities. The display features early masters such as Dhirendranath Brahma, Sunil Madhab Sen, and Sudhir Munshi, known for their poetic sensibility and tonal refinement rooted in the Abanindranath Tagore tradition.
Modern masters like Jogen Chowdhury, Sunil Das, and Paritosh Sen represent the post-independence turn toward expressive, psychologically charged figuration, while a dedicated section revisits the “Indian Style” pioneered at the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata. Works by Stuti Laha and Partha Sarathi Bhattacharjee reinterpret this style for today’s context.
The contemporary section includes works by seventeen artists—among them Aloke Sardar, Tarun Ghosh, and Ishita Adhikary—whose practices engage with urbanisation, ecological change, and identity. Together, the exhibition positions “East” not merely as a region, but as an evolving artistic and intellectual perspective.
Curator Kallol Bose, founder of Janus Art Gallery and Joint Secretary of the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, brings to the project more than three decades of research and exhibition experience in Bengal Modernism. His curatorial framework connects historical traditions with present-day artistic experimentation.
Founded in 2003 by Gitanjali Maini, Gallery G has established itself as a leading platform for modern and contemporary Indian art, partnering with organisations such as the Sandeep & Gitanjali Maini Foundation and the Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation. The gallery continues to bridge artists, collectors, and institutions through curatorial and investment initiatives.
The Masters & The Modern: East Edition is open to the public till March 31, 2026. More information is available at galleryg.com.
