Vadehra Art Gallery, in collaboration with the Shridharani Art Gallery at Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi, presents Sandhya Rāga, a posthumous exhibition of the late artist A. Ramachandran’s final works. The exhibition runs at Shridharani Art Gallery from 19 to 29 November 2025, and continues at Vadehra Art Gallery, Defence Colony, from 5 December 2025 to 6 January 2026.
Curated in close association with the artist’s family, Sandhya Rāga features paintings, drawings, and sculptures from Ramachandran’s later years, including several pieces shown for the first time. The exhibition reflects an intimate account of his creative and physical decline, interpreted through works that reveal both vulnerability and resilience. The title, chosen by his wife Chameli Ramachandran, signifies twilight—the reflective and tender close of an extraordinary artistic journey.
At the centre of the exhibition is Pilgrimage to Obeshwar (2023), Ramachandran’s final monumental triptych, created during a period of failing health but continuing creative clarity. The Eklingji series—particularly the Nine Views of Eklingji—captures his enduring fascination with the lotus pond at Eklingji near Udaipur. Although originally conceived as eleven views, only nine were completed, painted with a sense of quiet finality and profound attachment to the site that had inspired much of his earlier work.
Also featured are self-portrait drawings portraying the artist as an “inactive artist,” made during his final months when his ability to paint was physically limited. These portraits blend humour, honesty, and introspection, offering a poignant reflection on mortality and artistic endurance.
Born in 1935 in Attingal, Kerala, A. Ramachandran was among India’s foremost modern masters, known for his vibrant figurative compositions and engagement with myth, nature, and human experience. A recipient of the Padma Bhushan (2005) and the Raja Ravi Varma Puruskar (2003), his prolific career spanned painting, sculpture, literature, and illustration. Ramachandran passed away in 2024 in New Delhi. In October 2025, the Museum of A. Ramachandran was inaugurated in Kollam, Kerala, commemorating his life and legacy.
An e-catalogue accompanying the exhibition is available through Vadehra Art Gallery.
