AstaGuru’s upcoming auction highlights the works of both legendary and upcoming women artists, such as Amrita Sher-Gil, Anjolie Ela Menon and Yashika Sugandh
From September 29-30th, AstaGuru will conduct an online auction entitled “Through Her Eyes“, featuring works by women artists, focusing on the theme of mother and child. This auction will contain works by established names such as Amrita Sher-Gil and Anjolie Ela Menon, significant yet under-recognised figures such as Meera Mukherji and Sukumari Devi, and emerging names such as Mousumi Biswas and Yashika Sugandh. Works by Jodhaiya Bai Baiga, Bhuri Bai and Kalavati Shyam “carry indigenous traditions into contemporary practice.”

Amrita Sher-Gil needs no introduction, as she is well known for her fusion of European modernism and Indian life. Sukumari Devi was the first female faculty of Santiniketan. “The sale brings together a rich spectrum of voices—from pioneering modernists to pathbreaking tribal talents—each offering unique perspectives. At its core, the auction is dedicated to women artists and anchored by the timeless theme of ‘Mother and Child,’ celebrating tenderness, resilience, and the universal bonds of care and intimacy.”

Lot no. 20 includes With Earth and the Paradise features a unique interpretation of the biblical Adam and Eve, and the infamous serpent by Amrita Sher-Gil. Conversely, Lot no 16 features an indigenous bronze relief sculpture, which is one of Meera Mukherji’s initial forays into Bronze as a medium. Lot no. 1 features Jamini Roy’s expressionist interpretation of the central theme of ‘Mother and Child.’ Furthermore, Lot no 12 is also a work by Jamini Roy, which interprets the theme of ‘Mother and Child’ in the more indigenous style of Kalighat painting. Lot no. 55 features the work ‘Mother and son’ by the famed Bengal School founder Gaganendranath Tagore. Additionally, Lot no 59 is Krishen Khanna’s Pieta, which feature his contemplation on the subjects of death and dying, and is inspired by the religious symbolism he saw during his childhood in England, and the print of Da Vinci’s The Last Supper which he was gifted by his father.

“With Through Her Eyes, we aim to honour the immense contributions of women artists whose work has often remained underrepresented in the larger narrative of Indian art. By centering the timeless theme of Mother and Child, this auction not only highlights their creative brilliance but also amplifies voices that bring forth deeply personal, honest, and powerful perspectives. It is both a celebration and a long-overdue recognition of their role in shaping our cultural landscape.”
