Ariane, a Spatial Designer trained at the Kent Institute of Art and Design, began her design journey much earlier—as a young intern at an interior design studio in Ahmedabad. Her passion for the field was sparked at the age of 13, when the renovation of her family home by the same studio opened her eyes to the creative possibilities of design. During travels across India, she found herself captivated by the local crafts intricately woven into the homes and daily lives of the people she encountered. Though she initially pursued a Master’s in Economics, her heart eventually led her back to design.
Ariane’s design philosophy blends three core values: traditional techniques, sustainable materials, and an aesthetic informed equally by research and instinct. Her commitment extends beyond product design, she is passionate about reviving traditional crafts and hand skills, not only by building markets for them but also by inspiring the next generation. As part of her contribution to design education, she has served as visiting faculty and jury member at leading institutions, including the National Institute of Design.

Ariane Thakore Ginwala was recently honored with the ELLE Conscious Design Leader award, recognizing her thoughtful approach to design rooted in sustainability, craftsmanship, and cultural sensitivity.
Currently, Ariane is the principal designer for an upcoming sustainable wildlife retreat in Maharashtra—her most immersive project to date. From tablecloths and menus to villas and permaculture landscaping, she is shaping every detail, marking a bold new chapter in her exploration of sustainable architecture.
About This and That
Founded in 2016, This and That traces its roots to the 20+ year old interior design practice of Ariane Thakore Ginwala. The search for objects that completed her vision for spaces led to making things that she could only find in her mind. Fascinated by the rich diversity of Indian craft and contemporary sculpture around the world, her innate eye for detail found a match in a carpentry workshop in Ahmedabad. Thus began a collaborative journey where design and craftsmanship constantly challenged each other, traversing geographies, cultures and materials. Winning the prestigious EDIDA award for interior products for multiple collections, This and That has carved a niche for itself in India’s design story.
