Devastating Fire Guts Dastkar Bazaar: Artisans’ Livelihood in Danger

A devastating fire swept through Dastkar’s Nature Bazaar in South Delhi on March 15, 2026, gutting dozens of artisan stalls and causing massive losses to handmade crafts. No casualties were reported, but the incident has left vendors reeling from the destruction of irreplaceable goods.

Incident Overview

The blaze erupted around 7:30-7:37 AM at the Nature Bazaar near Andheria Mod in Mehrauli or Chhattarpur, rapidly engulfing 40-50 stalls stocked with flammable items like pashmina shawls, Afghan carpets, saris, handlooms, and handicrafts. Delhi Fire Services dispatched 10-24 fire tenders, containing the flames by 9 AM after intense efforts amid thick smoke. Officials suspect a short circuit as the cause, though investigations continue.

Impact on Artisans

Artisans from across India, many relying on the bazaar to bypass middlemen, lost goods worth crores, including stocks in the permanent Gali e Khas (37 stalls) and ongoing Bonanza Bazaar (5 stalls). Dastkar, which promotes traditional crafts at Kisan Haat, cancelled the event’s remaining days (originally March 6-16) to assess damage and support affected sellers via fundraisers. The loss threatens livelihoods in a space vital for cultural preservation.
