Vadehra Art Gallery, in collaboration with Sangeet Shyamala, is presenting a major solo exhibition of celebrated artist Vasundhara Tewari Broota. Titled Woman Song | Looking Back, the show is currently on view at Vadehra Art Gallery, Defence Colony, from 11 September to 11 October 2025.
Featuring up to 35 works spanning from the 1980s to the present, the exhibition traces the evolution of Broota’s practice, which has long been rooted in the representation of the female form. Her early explorations with fragmented body parts transition into larger figurative compositions, embedding her feminist sensibilities within depictions of the body as a site of resistance, transformation, and inner experience.
The works move beyond physical anatomy to probe psychological and emotional terrains, often merging the human figure with natural or surreal elements. These compositions highlight Broota’s ongoing engagement with themes of liberation, creation, and resilience within the cycles of life and womanhood.
Born in Kolkata in 1955, Vasundhara Tewari Broota studied literature at Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University, and trained in art at Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi. A recipient of multiple national and international awards, including recognitions from the Sahitya Kala Parishad and the silver medal at the First International Biennial of Plastic Arts, Algiers (1987), she has consistently participated in landmark exhibitions in India and abroad. Her works are held in significant collections such as the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; Chandigarh Museum; and Peabody Museum, USA.
Vadehra Art Gallery, established in 1987, is among the leading institutions promoting South Asian modern and contemporary art. With a strong focus on intergenerational practices, the gallery represents seminal figures such as M.F. Husain, S.H. Raza, Rameshwar Broota, Atul Dodiya, and Gauri Gill, while also supporting emerging voices.
Woman Song | Looking Back offers viewers a rare opportunity to revisit four decades of Broota’s compelling and feminist-inflected body of work, underscoring her place within the narrative of Indian contemporary art.
