A Fistful of Sky is a new solo art exhibition by Subodh Gupta in Mumbai that turns kitchen tools into giant sculptures.
About the Solo Art Exhibition
The famous artist Subodh Gupta is bringing a massive new show to Mumbai. It is called एक मुट्ठी आसमान (A Fistful of Sky). The exhibition opens on 3 April 2026 at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC). Curated by Clare Lilley, this show fills four floors with art made from objects we see every day.
“Subodh Gupta’s work has always drawn its strength from everyday objects,” says Aparajita Jain, Director of Nature Morte. Visitors will see how the artist turns simple things into grand stories.
Artist Practice
For over 30 years, Gupta has used things like tiffin boxes, pots, and pans to make art. He takes these common items and turns them into huge statues. His work helps us think about big ideas like moving to new places, hard work, and our dreams. By using things from the kitchen, he shows how sharing a meal can bring people together.
Key Themes
Subodh Gupta is showing many of these artworks in India for the first time during his new solo exhibition in Mumbai. One giant work, called Proust Mapping, is nine metres long. It is made from flat cooking pots that have scratches and dents from years of use. Furthermore, another work called Stupa uses shiny steel bowls to look like a holy building.
“Gupta makes visible the labour and care embedded in these gestures,” explains curator Clare Lilley. She says the art shows how simple acts like cooking and eating hold a community together.
Highlights of Exhibition
In addition, the most important part of the show is a new artwork also named A Fistful of Sky. It uses beds made of soft netting to create a space where people can think about resting and memory. Consequently, this is very special for Mumbai, a city that is always moving.
Gupta is excited to be back in the city. “Mumbai had an incredible energy that stayed with me,” the artist says. He hopes everyone will come to see his biggest private show in India yet.
