Delhi Art Society presents Samanvaya: Line · Colour · Form, a group art exhibition curated by Jyoti A Kathpalia that brings together 25 eminent artists in painting, printmaking, and sculpture at New Delhi’s India International Centre.
Exhibition Overview
Samanvaya means convergence in Indian languages. The show unites line, colour, and form across two- and three-dimensional works. These elements create dialogues among diverse practices in contemporary Indian art.
Curator Jyoti A Kathpalia states: “This exhibition is unique in that it speaks simultaneously to the individual and the universal. Each artist brings a distinct vision, yet together they establish a dialogue that reflects shared spatial, emotional, and thematic concerns. While the works are deeply personal, they also communicate through the universal language of art.”
Neeraj Gupta, President of Delhi Art Society, emphasises support for serious artists. He notes: “It has been my mission to support artists and contemporary Indian art. Over the years, Delhi Art Society has brought serious and committed artists to the fore. In the present art scene, attention needs to be redirected towards contemporary art and sculpture. This is essential if contemporary Indian art is to claim its rightful place on the global stage.”
Highlighted Artists and Works
Kalicharan Gupta displays pieces from his Metropolis series. These abstract compositions use a paint-dropping technique to evoke urban expansion and spiritual nostalgia through geometric patterns.
Jagdish Chander contributes an abstract expressionist work with chaotic brushstrokes. A discernible face contrasts against a reddish-pink field, releasing emotional energy tied to human anguish. Anand Moy Banerji, a printmaking pioneer, shows semi-figurative prints like Form–III and Form–VI that layer memory and existential tension.
Neeraj Gupta sculpts intuitively with wood in From the Smithy of the Soul. The material’s grain guides organic forms expressing inner essence. Rakesh Kumar Gupta’s Heads series blends cubism and folk idioms in vibrant, distorted portraits probing psychological depths.
Shruti Binay’s oil and pencil works, such as Vestige I, meditate on memory and loss through suspended fabrics against black voids. Vandana Rakesh’s watercolours from The Journey Within fuse primitivism and modernism in dreamlike interior landscapes.
