Bengal’s Terracotta Heritage on Display in Sanjay Das’s Shape of Silences, by KIAN Foundation

Sanjay Das, Shape of Silences

KIAN Foundation introduces respected photographer Sanjay Das to Mumbai for Shape of Silences, a solo exhibition curated by the distinguished writer Ina Puri. The exhibition will take place at Cymroza Art Gallery, Mumbai, inviting audiences into a visual archive of Bengal’s vanishing terracotta heritage. Bringing the Delhi-based adventurer and artist to Mumbai, KIAN Foundation visualizes this show as a way to connect unexplored vanishing heritage to a wider contemporary audience.

Bengal’s temples and their intricate terracotta reliefs, are living archives of stories-mythological, historical, and everyday life etched in clay. Sanjay Das’s photographs capture the lingering emotions and the weight of silence that hover over these sacred sites, translating their quiet grandeur into visual poetry. Through his lens, viewers are invited to witness the resonance and historical richness that make Bengal an enduring spirit of Indian artistic heritage. What the artist describes as “responsible photography”, these images alongside artistic expressions, are also powerful documents of India’s endangered cultural heritage. Many of the sites he photographed may already have disappeared, making this exhibition an urgent act of preservation.

“At KIAN Foundation, we see this project as a vital cultural record,” said Siddharth Naik, Co-Founder & Director.

Sanjay’s images don’t impose a story—they quietly hold space for memory, erosion, and the sacred silences of history.
