Kolkata-based artist Arindam Chatterjee will present his second major solo exhibition at Emami Art, opening November 7, 2025, and running through December 24, 2025.
The exhibition features approximately thirty works, predominantly on paper, exploring themes of human ethics and Francis Bacon’s concept of the “Brutality of Fact.” The title, derived from Rabindranath Tagore’s interpretation of “sub-human,” refers to an existence between base animal and fully enlightened human being.
Chatterjee, born in 1972, studied at the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, and Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan. Initially working as an abstract painter in the 1990s, he transitioned to figurative painting in the mid-2000s. His work is characterized by powerful imagery combining rich abstract pigmentation with figures that reference mythological and social realities.
This marks Chatterjee’s second exhibition at Emami Art, following his 2023 show. According to CEO Richa Agarwal, the current body of work demonstrates “heightened intimacy and introspection” compared to his previous large-scale presentation.
The artist has received several honors, including the Navonmesha Puraskara (2003), National Cultural Scholarship from the Government of India, and the H K Kejriwal Memorial Award (1997). He continues to live and work in Kolkata.
