Gallery Pristine Contemporary will present What Memory Built in Colour, a two-person exhibition featuring Belarusian artist Dasha Buben and Sri Lankan artist Thilini Jinadasa, opening on Saturday, 8th November and running through Wednesday, 24th December 2025.
The exhibition brings together 31 artworks across two distinct series: Vivid Memories of Things That Never Happened to Me by Dasha Buben (19 works) and The Secret of Hues by Thilini Jinadasa (12 works). Both artists explore the intersection of memory, emotion, and colour through abstract painting.
Berlin-based Buben examines the fluid and unreliable nature of memory in her series, questioning whether recollections are fact or fiction. “Memory affects us on every level: psychologically, emotionally, and even physically. It is the very foundation of our identity, shaping who we are and how we understand ourselves,” reads the curatorial note. Her paintings translate fleeting memories, from childhood moments to recent experiences into chromatic fields where recollection and imagination converge.
Jinadasa approaches colour as both language and mystery, creating layered compositions that balance chaos and control. “Colour holds what words cannot—its secret is the way it carries both emotion and memory, chaos and control, in silence,”. Her abstract works function as vessels for emotion and remembrance, suggesting that colour carries meaning beyond what can be articulated.
“What Memory Built in Colour brings together two artists whose practices engage deeply with abstraction as a language of emotion and recollection,” say Co-Founders Arjun Sawhney and Arjun Butani. “Their works remind us that colour is not only a visual experience but an emotional one, capable of holding the weight of what we remember and what we imagine.”
The exhibition marks Gallery Pristine Contemporary’s continued commitment to presenting artists whose practices expand the language of abstraction and contemporary art from across South Asia and beyond.
