India’s Most Prestigious Annual Art Event Showcases Contemporary Visual Art
New Delhi, August 6, 2025 – The Lalit Kala Akademi proudly announces the opening of the 64th National Exhibition of Art (NEA), India’s most prestigious annual visual arts showcase, now open to the public at the Lalit Kala Akademi Galleries, Rabindra Bhavan.
Established in 1955, the National Exhibition of Art has served as the premier platform for showcasing visual advances and contemporary artistic expression in India for seven decades. This year’s exhibition continues the Akademi’s tradition of presenting cutting-edge artworks while keeping pace with evolving artistic practices and technological developments.
Since its inception in 1955 with 280 selected works from 1,200 entries, the National Exhibition has grown into a comprehensive showcase of India’s artistic diversity. The exhibition has evolved significantly over the decades, introducing the prestigious Akademi Gold Plaque in 1956 for the best exhibit, alongside ten awards of Rs. 1,000 each for deserving works.
The exhibition’s reach has expanded nationally through a rotating system that has brought the showcase to major art centers including Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai. In 2006, the Akademi enhanced the experience by incorporating cultural performances, successfully merging visual arts with performative and literary expressions. The institution has also embraced technological progress by accepting digital photography in the graphic art category.

Two significant publications were unveiled during the inaugural ceremony:
• The 64th NEA Exhibition Catalogue: A comprehensive documentation of featured works and participating artists
• “Printmaker for All Seasons”: A special commemorative book celebrating the life and artistic legacy of Padma Shri Shyam Sharma
