Mamallapuram, Chennai Poised to Host Tamil Biennale in January 2027

Tamil Nadu authorities are planning the state’s first ‘Tamil Biennale’ for January 2027, with Chennai and the UNESCO heritage site of Mamallapuram as likely venues. The event aims to position Tamil Nadu as a global hub for art and cultural tourism.

Announcement Background

Chief Minister MK Stalin first revealed the biennale at the Tamil Nadu Global Tourism Summit 2026 in Mamallapuram two weeks ago. He coupled it with a ₹100 crore infrastructure boost for Mamallapuram to support tourism and events. This marks Tamil Nadu’s entry into large-scale international art festivals, inspired by models like the Kochi Biennale.

Planning and Expertise

Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation’s Innocent Divya recently visited the Kochi Biennale to study operations. Artist and Kochi Biennale co-founder Bose Krishnamachari has met officials and may advise on setup, though he declined comment. Officials are debating a dedicated foundation versus tourism department oversight, with plans to scout the Venice Biennale for insights.

Venue and Scope

Mamallapuram’s ancient Shore Temple and rock carvings make it ideal, alongside Chennai’s urban vibrancy. Collaborations with nearby Puducherry and Auroville artists are under consideration to broaden appeal. Planners aim to finalize structure amid upcoming assembly elections, drawing global experts.
