The Raza Foundation Invites Young Art Historians and Writers to Colloquium on Modern Indian Art

In an exciting initiative to bridge generations through critical engagement with art, the Raza Foundation has announced a two-day colloquium, also called a seminar, dedicated to the lives and legacies of seven towering figures of modern Indian art.

The event invites young art historians and writers under the age of 40 to submit their reflections and research on the practice and influence of artists like M. F. Husain, S. H. Raza, F. N. Souza, Ram Kumar, V. S. Gaitonde, Tyeb Mehta, and Krishen Khanna.

This colloquium is not merely a retrospective glance at the past but a dynamic platform for dialogue. 2025 marks the centenary of both Tyeb Mehta and Krishen Khanna—an opportune moment to reexamine their contributions within the broader landscape of Indian modernism.

The Raza Foundation, known for its deep commitment to fostering critical art discourse, hopes to ignite fresh conversations led by emerging voices in the field and get more people talking about ART!

Application Requirements

The Foundation seeks well-researched papers (approximately 2,500 words or 15-minute presentations) that engage with critical insights, draw upon archival resources, and reflect a strong grounding in art historical scholarship and curatorial thought. Submissions are welcome in English or Hindi and must center on one of the listed artists.

The call is not only an academic opportunity but a celebration of intellectual curiosity. Selected participants will be awarded an honorarium that includes support for travel and lodging, removing barriers for those who often remain underrepresented in such spaces.

To apply, interested individuals must submit an abstract, a brief professional profile, and a writing sample—published or unpublished—by May 31, 2025. Submissions and queries can be directed to: colloquium.rf@gmail.com.

In a country where modern art often resides in the shadow of colonial narratives or Western paradigms, this colloquium is a reminder of the rich, provocative, and diverse heritage that Indian artists have created on their own terms. Now, it is time for a new generation to reinterpret, reframe, and renew those legacies with fresh eyes and bold voices. As the torch of cultural memory is passed on, the Raza Foundation invites you to be part of this compelling journey.
